Charge controller
Takes current for solar panels and uses it to charge batteries

De-rate factor
loss of energy due to heat, panel soiling, number of electrical connection points, Inverter and transformer, Shading, system age, Mismatch and more.

Grid Tied
PV System that connects to house with the house still connected to the electric company

Grid-Tied w/battery backup
PV (solar) System that is connected with the electric company and has additional components to charge batteries and to keep select circuits on the home running when the electric company goes down.

Inverter
Equipment that changes DC electricity into AC for use in a home or business. Usually connected to all panels in PV systems. Sometimes called centralized inverter or string inverter.

Kw
(Kilo-watt) 1000 watts

Micro-Inverter
A smaller inverter that is attached to each panel.

NEC
National Electric Code that must be followed to pass all inspections

Passive Tracker
Uses a refrigerant to move the panels from east to west tracking the sun. No motors are used.
